I have thought of nothing else since the end of June. Why do I want to run for School Trustee? In my endeavour to find the answer, I have reflected on the last four years – both my accomplishments and failures, and how effectively the School Board has operated.

This next term will be one of great change, and uncertainty – growth in our community, no new funding model (which means Transcona taxpayers pay more), and navigating through the long timelines and new processes for new schools. You don’t want to lose momentum. I ask who is the best one to help our community through this time?

The most significant priority we have in Transcona right now is the growth that we are experiencing in all parts of our community; there is growth both in the north and south and more new developments on the way. None more visible than when you are driving down Transcona Blvd. You can see the extent of this growth and there is more to come.

What does this growth mean to us in education? When we have more houses, we have more children; more children means a need for more classroom space, other spaces, resources, material, teachers, buses and the list goes on.

But how do we deal with this growth? We deal with it by being fiscally responsible and putting what’s educationally best for students first and foremost. We must first use what we have before asking for more. That means looking at our schools, classrooms, and buses to determine how we can accommodate more students with what we already have. Once that is done, the next step is to work with the provincial government to look at space and upgrades. We have started down this road and have
both short- and long-term plans, but everything takes time and we need to stay on top of these issues in order to make sure we are providing all of our children in our community with a safe and healthy environment in which to learn.

So why run for school trustee? To put it simply, I know the road ahead and want to be part of helping students, parents, staff, and my community through the processes used so that we come out better than before. For our School Division to succeed and for the children and community of Transcona to be heard, you need an experienced Trustee.
I am that experienced Trustee. I have the knowledge base, strong sense of community, strong leadership skills, strong voice, time, passion, and, most importantly, proven ability to navigate the road ahead so that we, as a community, come out stronger than before.

I have dedicated the last 30 years of my life to being your full-time School Trustee making sure that the children of Transcona get the best education possible.

I am a strong advocate for the children and taxpayers of Transcona. You need an experienced Trustee with a strong voice to ensure that our schools and programs do not diminish, only strengthen.

If successful, I will continue to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to the role of a School Trustee. I hope that you will support me in my efforts by casting your vote in my favour.
